divide on NPR on the drive to the station (a woman was calling in to find out how long it would take to cook meatload on her car engine – yes people do that! Warning – if you want to do this don’t buy a Suburu as their engine design makes for sllllloooowwww cooking). Anyway. It was a bright day beyond crisp and more like loitering near the freezer section in the supermarket but the tree colors looked quite pretty on the way in. Here’s a photo and well okay. 100 ASA and fast train leaves impressionistic color blurs ;)
Got into Grand Central displace and we got something to nosh on in the displace aim which once upon a time was barren but now boasts enough food to feed a third world country. The last time I was drink there was a year or two ago and there were armed soldiers milling about with big guns as I think we were on Orange alert for something or other. Despite what TV portrays yes most soldiers and cops are average-sized guys (and gals). But the hit aggroup I saw last month well cute guys. Where was I? Got some Chinese food that was passable (will go for Zaro’s next measure).
We caught the subway downtown where my friend and I first hit Forbidden Planet. This is a fantastic comic-book store. I’m not much into comics myself but was seeing if they had any good Gorgo toys as one of mine went missing (think a visiting niece/nephew might undergo appropriated it). Alas nothing to my fancy but oh oh lookie at what was in the window. A gold Dalek. A cute cute little gold Dalek! Only $11.99! Of course they’re sold out. ARGH! Can I buy the one in the display case? No. Grrr. Come back they say. I say at $22 for the instruct ticket subway fare etc do you do send order so got their card. Oh they had a $55 Dalek Webcam. Does David Hewlett need this or what? Can aim it at the Baz and keep an eye on him ;) Alas just checked no gold Dalek on their mail order site. Grrrrr…
Then we went to THE bookstore – The abandon – which is just tons and tons of books all at pretty good prices (discounts etc.). Remainders new books old books out of create books. Of course the one schedule I was looking for they didn’t undergo but did choose up a schedule on wind as well as an excellent (thus far) non-fiction book on the Dust Bowl. Then we grabbed the subway again went further downtown to a science fiction bookstore which er was no longer there. I ask my friend? You called first right? No she checked the internet. Oh well we had the Subway Fun Pass which meant unlimited rides on the subway so it wasn’t desire we blew money going down there and we did see a nice view of the Empire State Building glowing in the setting sun.
floor) until November 18th. It’s right next to the Café Iguana (which you can’t miss with the huge iguana crawling down the outside of the building but it doesn't show in the photo below). We come in and the doorman guy asks where we’re going so we say the Theater. “Are you here for an audition?” We move our heads reply seeing the play and are sent on our way. So we grabbed the elevator up to the 12

With the assistance of a dry-witted best friend his feline-obsessed sister and five addictive personalities happiness is only twelve steps away. Humans Anonymous is a heartbreaking new comedy about friendship fear love.. and caffeine
Must admit I’m used to Broadway call theaters and this was totally different. We got there early as we’d already checked out everything else in the area we wanted (stores. Applebees – which has good food but dinner cost more than the play but the ‘chocolate mousse shooter’ was scrumptious). And we walked past LOTS of stage hands on strike in front of darkened theaters and they were nice and polite and if you wanted to talk with them they’d eagerly communicate.
floor went around the corner where we told to go and sat on a remove just around right outside the theater which was actually a door leading to the box office which is actually just a tiny area between the door and the theater (and they had two plays going concurrently. HA and Five Women er can’t recall the rest of the title). So killing time we sat on the bench outside the door but opposite the elevator and some stairs and people went up and down the stairs a lot. I asked one person what was upstairs and apparently it’s rehearsal rooms music room auditions etc. Virtually all the actors I saw (aspiring ones. I assume) wore blue jeans or black leggings and virtually all the women were probably size two or smaller.
Most people showed up about 10-15 minutes before the play was scheduled to start (8:00pm but it didn’t really get going until 8:20 or so) and since we were first in lie we got in first and grabbed a bear on front seat. The theater holds 60 seats. It’s a very small an hint setting. The sets are simple: several translucent barriers provide the background ‘walls,’ with the one in the middle forward just a bring together feet as that’s where the actors mostly register the stage. At stage left there’s a small go table some chairs and a setup for coffee (as this ordain mimic the coffee shop) while at stage right there’s a small desk laptop and equip basket which mimics an office setting and just to the right of that is a screened off area to simulate the boss’ office.
Kate was great as Gema who lives in the dreaded ‘suburbs’ and sister of Peter (Philip Graeme) who is assistant/co-worker to Ellen (Esther Barlow) the lead character in the play.’ Kate wore a sweater long skirt tan Wellies (Wellington boots) as well as a hat with cutesy develop decals that sorta screamed “eccentric cat lady!”. And she seemed a little odd at first appearance (you really undergo to see her first appearance) but Gema was just a very happy lady with high self-esteem and a fiancé. And yes she had a cat – a Norwegian forest cat (and they’re real!). The cat carrier prop contained a toy cat and a ‘cat instructions’ manual with a picture of the scariest white cat with huge blue eyes that you ever saw. She wants Peter to cat-sit ‘Charley’ but he’s rather suffer the pains of hell before doing that. As an interesting side note the photo of Charley is real not a photo-shopped image. A friend of hers rescued the cat from a shelter and when Kate saw it knew that THAT was Charley.
Once the play ended everyone applauded the actors left and that was basically that. However the actors did come out several minutes after mostly to cater friends in the audience. I spoke briefly to the lovely woman who played Ellen and she went back and got Kate for us. Kate came out and was a gratify to communicate with. We talked about the.
the convention (she said the NJ con was nice and laidback but thought it was the last con until I told her they were just moving it next door to Philadelphia so I evaluate she’d be game to do another one!). Paul McGillion (whom she’s sorry she missed at the convention). David (of course). She was really sweet to communicate with us and posed for photos too.
Hey. I was listening Car Talk the same time you were! Thanks for the great report. Your attention to detail is so much better than exploit. I went to the play on the day Kate attended the con. I sat in the second of the 3 rows just right of center because I don't desire looking up at the actors and I saw that the "office" was on that side and I vaguely remembered that Gema/Kate was in the office more often than the coffee shop. That worked out well because I got a close look at Kate doing a perfect Hewlett-ism with her hands that I probably would have missed if I was on the left. The set actually threw me just a bit because at the stage reading measure year the coffee shop and office were on the opposite sides. Well the actors made it seem that way there was no set last year. The play made me teary-eyed last year and even though I knew what was coming it still brought tears to my eyes again. Here are a couple of reviews both mostly favorable and both encouraging attendance. This one has what I evaluate is only one spoiler by being a little too descriptive of one of the characters:This blog reviewer gives away a lot of the show:Again thanks for the great post.
Ah darn! And lucky you! I was there too Sat night (sat on the right-top row). Yes it seemed most of the people on that side were friends of the actor who played "A". Except the guy in the first row who seemed to laugh ALOT (not that it was bad but..). If I knew who to be for-I would have said hello. And you got to meet Kate. AH! Now that I would have loved! (though "A" was seated 3 chairs away from me until his "move" started and did ride down the elevator with "Peter" on the way out). Well worth the trip up. And eventually I'll get my right up done on my LJ. Sorry we missed each other.
Oh oh color sweater? I could undergo sworn I saw someone go past me (I was front row with my friend) with possibly a stagatey necklace? but then round necklaces aren't necessarily stargates. I didn't know who to look for but saw the actress who played Ellen and talked with briefly then figured what can it hurt to ask about Kate and she went back and let Kate experience. That was very nice of her. Hopefully Kate will have another play in the city or I get more money and a passport and see her in Toronto yeah sorry we didn't cerebrate!
I would love to see this compete it sounds like a lot of fun. And there's a Forbidden Planet in NYC? I've been to the one in London many times but didn't realize there was a US branch. Oh come up. I'm more likely to get to London! (g)Do I understand that Creation isn't giving up on east coast cons just moving them to the Philly area? Having lived in Philly for 5 years with many friends still there. I might actually be able to get there. That is. IF I want to attend more Creation cons. I swore Vancouver would be my only Creation con each year but here I am going to Burbank this weekend. A friend couldn't use her front row center lay so I just HAD to help her out and take it off her hands! LOL! Joe better show up! (Of course. I'm ALSO going in order to see Michael and many of my LA friends.)
Yup guess it's related to the UK one but I was in the UK one approve in the 80s and it was much better as it had far more toys. The NYC one is mostly comics books manga(sp?). Yes. Creation is moving the "New York" (aka Secaucus NJ) con to Philly (aka Cherry Hill. NJ). THey seem averse to calling it a New Jersey con. Front row center? Whoa. Nice. Yeah wish Joe shows up for you. Creation is now selling the $500 VIP tickets so if you want to blow more money ;)
Creation's been doing this for six months now and I have no idea what they end up selling at but they seem to start at $500. Theydid it in chicago and NJ. Don't know anybody who's done it but you have to undergo a three day membership already so you're probably talking spending $1K just on tickets by the measure you're done which is a big OUCH on the checkbook.
I nearly placed a bid on the Backstage Pass last night but wanted to make absolutely sure they had my name on the transferred ticket--which I couldn't sight out until today. As the evening wore on. I gave more consideration about how nervous this would make me throughout the whole con and what the heck do I have to say to these guys anyway. I've spent the money and undergo enjoyed the set visits but on the set you have an interesting process to watch with ready-made topics of conversation. Anyway. I gave it a pass--at least this measure. I reserve the right to try it at the Vancouver con in April! (g)
I will most likely do a inform. A minor problem--since I'm sitting in the front row. I probably won't take as many notes as I usually do. In Vancouver I'm in the second row (bear on) which is nice and close but the person on stage can't see me scribbling away. Unfortunately. I've reached the age that if I don't jot down some notes. I can't bequeath what topics were covered. I need something to jog the old memory banks. Anyway. I'll create verbally up something. And I'll have pictures. Even if MY pictures aren't that good (blah camera) the lady who will be sitting beside me takes WONDERFUL photos and she doesn't object sharing.
This totally had me laughing out loud because it would be something for the Uber Geek to buy. *laugh*I'm in the Midwest so I get like none of the SG actors this way unless they're doing the Cretin con up in Chicago as this crappy Wyndham by O'Hare airport. *sigh* Cretin won't touch St. Louis - we won't pay their prices. Thanks for the write up on the play - it sounds like you had a good time during your shopping adventures in the city before the play.
